Project Overview
In the Affordable Home Project, students were tasked with surveying a teacher and building a home to their requirements. The project allows students to work with clients and create an Affordable Home that meets the Habitat for Humanity standards. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged families around the world find affordable housing. The Habitat for Humanity standards include limitations to keep the price down, including square footage, and materials used, they also include other considerations including handicap and green living. The project also has student include Green and Sustainable Design Considerations. Green and Sustainable Design is about building for the future and considering all part of the building process including the building of the home, the waste created, and what will happen to the home when it becomes vacant. Overall the purpose of this project is to have students create a home for a client, while considering Habitat for Humanity Standards, as well as Green and Sustainable Design.
Takeaways
Throughout this project, I was able to greatly improve my knowledge of working with a client, working with requirements and specifications, and using Autodesk Revit. This project was able to deepen my knowledge of everything that goes into the home building process, from designing to fabrication, to post construction.
The goal of this project was to create a home for a client, mine being Mr. Lee, that would be affordable and meet various standards. The home was designed considering the clients activities, which helped make many decisions, and with the ability to remain suitable for the client throughout their life, so that as they get older the home is still accessible.
During this project, we were forced to oblige with various code including Habitat for Humanity and Green and Sustainable Design Considerations. These codes taught us about the planning and considerations that go into building a home, engineers would consider the change in the landscape, the materials used, and what happens to a home at the end of its lifestyle.
Overall, this project was very impactful in giving me a deeper insight into what truly goes into the planning of a home. This project also allowed me to work on my time management, a skill that proves very useful now and in the future.
